The Women’s International Zionist Organization’s Societal Contributions

2zionA nonprofit, the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO) is comprised of volunteers in various parts of the world that have chosen to focus on the social welfare of Israeli society and its multiple sectors. The organization also strives to advance the status of women as well as promote Jewish education in Israel. WIZO is currently the largest provider of social welfare services.

WIZO began in 1920 in Great Britain and it would go on to receive recognition in 1959 by the United Nations as a non-governmental organization. It was the first Zionist organization to receive consultative status at the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (known today as UNICEF) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

WIZO’s American branch was launched in the 1980s as a way to strengthen ties and provide funding to various projects based in Israel. The organization has since managed over 700 social welfare programs including homes for girls in distress, child care centers, shelters for battered women, and services for the elderly. The Fully Volunteered Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America

crohns

In 1965, Irwin M. Rosenthal and Shelby Modell launched the non-profit called Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Comprised entirely of volunteers it continues its perseverance towards finding a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis while finding ways to improve the lives of children and adults living their life with digestive diseases. Today, the CCFA has over 40,000 members and more than twenty chapters across the country.

The CCFA’s fundraising efforts are used to fuel studies focused on further understanding the causes and a potential cure for Crohn’s disease and colitis. These funds are often turned into donations to medical institutions or investigators that are looking to build a solid resume early in their careers. The CCFA also finances underdeveloped areas of research. Today, more than $150 million in funding has been raised thanks to the efforts of the CCFA.

When it isn’t focused on its funding goals, the CCFA also seeks to offer patient support services and literature in all of its chapters. Pamphlets, books, awareness campaigns, and chapter events to further understanding are all part of the process. Advocacy is also a major component of the CCFA as some of its volunteers also happen to be patients.

Since it was founded in 1901, the Jewish National Fund (JNF) has continued its efforts for more than ninety years and counting. It has grown by leaps and bounds from its small beginnings into an environmental forerunner with a reputation that reaches practically all around the world, responsible for planting over 150 million trees. The JNF has also been instrumental in creating over 100 dams and reservoirs, developing numerous acres of land, and it has also played a part in the creation of more than 900 beautiful parks. When it’s not busy working on its environmental efforts, the JNF also dedicates resources to ensuring children and young adults of Israeli descent remember their rich heritage.

Former journalist Theodor Herz is the man behind the JNF. Looking to establish a national fund to buy land for a Jewish State in Ottoman-controlled Palestine, Herz’s fund grew rapidly, increasing its reach to more than five million Jewish people across a multitude of countries by the 1920s. In 2001 the JNF celebrated its 100th birthday and it is unwavering in its mission to better the future of Israel.

The Fascinating History of the Gesù Church

Miami’s strong Catholic community is responsible for the historic Gesù Church, a church that has the distinction of being the oldest in the entire city. When it originally opened in the late 1800s, its building materials largely consisted of wood and the land it was built upon was a donation. The person behind the benevolent act of kindness was none other than American industrialist Henry Flagler, also known as the father of Miami and Palm Beach. It took several years before the Gesù Church’s finally reinforced its construction with concrete and steel in the 1900s.

To this day, the Gesù Church continues to hold onto its status as the religious voice for the region’s colorful Catholic community. Besides its operation as a church, the Sisters of St. Joseph once ran the Gesù School which opened in 1905 and went by the name of The Academy of the Sisters of St. Joseph St. Catherine’s Convent. The school stuck around for a number of years until its demolishing in 1984.

For more than a decade now, the Jesuits of Antilles continues to staff the Gesù Church parish. As the oldest church in South Florida, Gesù encourages people from all walks of life to explore the landmark that has served the community for more than a century.

The Animal Friendly ASPCA

aspcaThe American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is perhaps best known by its acronym ASPCA. It is a non-profit organization that has tirelessly focused its attention on preventing animal cruelty for more than 100 years and relentlessly pursues its mission “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States”. The ASPCA has been focused on this mission since the 1800s.

In 1824, Henry Bergh formed the ASPCA shortly after the creation of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in the United Kingdom. It is still the oldest animal welfare organization in the country and it has the distinction of being the first humane organization to emerge in the Western Hemisphere. Because of Bergh’s vision, the first anti-cruelty law was passed on April 19, 1866.

Seeking to improve the welfare and health of animals when it launched, the ASPCA opened its first animal hospitals in the early 1900s. Since then, the ASPCA has played a hand in multiple breakthroughs in technology and medicine. These breakthroughs include anesthesia for animals and open-heart surgery in 1918 and 1961, respectively. In addition to its hospitals and steadfast anti-cruelty efforts, the ASPCA also offers pets and parents services as well as programs for animals considered to be at risk.
