The Humane Society of Greater Miami Finds Loving Homes for Pets

HSGM_Logo-1The Humane Society of Greater Miami is an animal welfare organization seeking to place every dog and cat in its care in a loving home by promoting responsible pet ownership and spearheading spaying and neutering programs. Each pet receives shelter, veterinary care, and lots of TLC while they wait to find a new home.

The Humane Society of Greater Miami charitable efforts in helping homeless animals across Miami-Dade County has been going on since the late 1930s. Today, more than 280 homeless receive care and have a second chance to find a home with a committed and responsible family. The organization runs two veterinary clinics in Cutler Bay and North Miami Beach aimed at reducing pet overpopulation, performing more than 10,000 sterilization surgeries each year. The organization also provides complimentary services for those experiencing financial hardship, including spay/neuter programs.

Over 1,000 animals being care for by The Humane Society of Greater Miami end with a happy ending as the newest family member in a loving home. Prior to placing the animal up for adoption, they are given a comprehensive health checkup and receive all of their vaccinations. Counseling and guidance is provided to ensure that pets end up in the right home.

David_Sheldrick_Wildlife_Trust_Logo

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust focuses on protecting and preserving Africa’s wilderness and the richly varied wildlife that inhabits it, with a particular concentration on endangered species such as the Black Rhino and elephants. It is currently the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world.

Named after the Warden of Tsavo East National Park and naturalist David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) was established in 1977 by Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick D.B.E, Sheldrick’s wife. The DSWT’s first goal continues to be its Orphans’ Project, which has played a role in numerous successful elephant and rhino rescue and rehabilitation programs, saving them from common threats such as poaching. Since its founding after Sheldrick passed, the DSWT has raised over 140 infant elephants and successfully returned them back into the wild.

Daphne Sheldrick and her work with the DWST continue to receive significant recognition. Among her numerous awards and accolades, she was given an M.B.E. in 1989. In June 2000 she received an Honorary Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery by Glasgow University.

Hetrick-Martin Institute: An LGBTQ Youth Ally

hetrickMartinBased in New York, the Hetrick-Martin Institute has remained steadfast in its efforts to assist LGBTQ youth. Since its founding, it has grown tremendously from a small group of volunteers into a major provider of social support and programming for LGBTQ youth that have been deemed at risk. These youths have diverse backgrounds and range in age from 13 to 24.

Founded in 1979, Hetrick-Martin Institute’s name comes from Emery Hetrick and Damien Martin, a pair of doctors and life partners inspired to take action after learning more about the story of a homeless fifteen-year-old boy who was beaten and kicked out his home due to his sexual orientation. Upon assembling a group of volunteers to help young people seeking support, the organization originally went by the name of the Institute for the Protection of Lesbian and Gay Youth (IPLGY), changing its name in 1988.

Since it began, the Hetrick-Martin Institute has launched programs for more than 2,000 youths and has served more than 7,000 hot meals. Its HIV prevention programs remain strong, with hundreds of participants and it has trained nearly 1,500 people.

Oliver’s Hearing Aid Bank Fights the Effects of Hearing Loss

heyOliver!

A University of Miami division, Oliver’s Hearing Aid Bank was started by and is named after twelve-year-old patient Oliver Stern. Oliver’s Hearing Bank seeks to supply hearing aids to children grappling with hearing loss that are financially qualified. Hearing aids that are no longer in use or are considered surplus are recycled. Each hearing aid is meticulously tested and then reprogrammed so it can be used by another patient.

Oliver Stern was just two years old when he became a patient at the UHealth Ear Institute’s Department of Otolaryngology and he remains one to this day. Unable to hear since birth, he wore hearing aids until he turned four years old and was given cochlear implants by the Otolaryngology Department’s Chair, Dr. Fred Telischi. Since the implants, Oliver has undergone audiology and therapy services and he remains an important Ear Institute ambassador.

Would you like to donate to Oliver’s Hearing Aid Bank? If so, you can send in your old hearing aid no matter how old it may be and allow someone the opportunity to hear again or for the very first time. The Gesù Church and its History

gesuchurchRoman Catholic Gesù Church is a historic piece of architecture located in Miami that came about as a result of the city’s rich Catholic community. Fun fact: the church is older than any other church in Miami.  When the church initially opened its doors during the late 1800s, its construction consisted of wood and the land it was built upon was a donation by American industrialist Henry Flagler, perhaps best known for being the father of Miami and Palm Beach.  It wasn’t until 1921 that The Gesù Church began to switch to a concrete and steel structure.

Throughout its several decades of existence, Gesù Church remains South Florida’s spiritual ambassador for its vibrant Catholic community.  In addition to being a church, the Sisters of St. Joseph oversaw the Gesù Church’s Gesù School which opened in 1905 and was once called The Academy of the Sisters of St. Joseph St. Catherine’s Convent. The school remained in operation for several years until it was demolished in 1984.

Today, Gesù Church is still one of the three downtown churches and ts parish has been staffed by the Jesuits of Antilles province for over ten years.  As the oldest church in South Florida, Gesù welcomes everyone to visit the landmark that has served the community for over 100 years.

The Many Goals of the Women’s International Zionist Organization

wizoToday we’re turning our attention over to the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO), a nonprofit made up of volunteers living in over fifty countries that remain focused on the social welfare of Israeli society and each and every one of its sectors. The organization also seeks to advance the status of women as well as promote Jewish education in Israel. WIZO holds the distinction of being the largest provider of social welfare services.

It was in 1920 that WIZO began in Great Britain, eventually being recognized in 1959 by the United Nations as a non-governmental organization. It became the first Zionist organization to receive consultative status at the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (better known these days simply as UNICEF) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

During the 1980s WIZO implemented its American branch with the goal of strengthening its ties and providing funding to its Israel-based projects. Today the organization is responsible for managing 750 social welfare programs that include homes for girls in distress, child care centers, battered women shelters, and elderly services. Among its many awards and accolades, WIZO was awarded the Israel Prize for its societal contributions and lifetime achievements.

Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America Declares War on Digestive Diseases

ccfacolorlogo

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) was founded by Shelby Modell and Irwin M. Rosenthal back in 1965. The nonprofit foundation is full operated by volunteers and remains steadfast in its dedication to aid the ongoing efforts to find a cure for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, as well as bettering the lives of children and adults that are combating digestive diseases. Since it was founded the CCFA is now consists of more than 45,000 members and it has over 25 chapters across the United States.

The funds earned or gathered by the CCFA go towards studies intended to determine the causes and a cure for Crohn’s disease and colitis. These funds are typically donated to medical institutions or investigators that are establishing the blueprints for their career. The CCFA also finances underdeveloped areas of research. Today, the foundation has managed to raise and provide over $150 million in important funding.

When it isn’t spearheading funding initiatives, the CCFA also aims to offer patient support services and literature in every single one of its chapters. These include informational pamphlets, books, awareness campaigns, and chapter events with the goal of providing a better understanding of what patients and their parents are going through. Advocacy is also an important component of the CCFA as some of its volunteers are patients as well as friends, family, and caregivers that want to make a difference and lay the groundwork to a future where Crohn’s and colitis are curable diseases.

Learn More About the Jewish National Fund

jnfThe Jewish National Fund (JNF) was founded back in 1901 and has operated for over 100 years. It has grown tremendously from its small beginnings into an environmental leader with a global reputation that has managed to plant more than 200 million trees. The JNF has also built over 230 dams and reservoirs, developed more than 200,000 acres of land, and it has created over 1,500 parks. Another goal of the JNF is to ensure that children and young adults of Israeli descent continue to have strong ties with Israel’s rich and extensive heritage.

The JNF was founded by one-time Viennese journalist Theodor Herzi who chose to create a national fund to purchase land for a Jewish State in Ottoman-controlled Palestine. The fund experienced exponential growth, reaching more than 10 million Jewish people across 65+ countries by the 1920s. In 2001 the JNF celebrated 100 years of operation and to this day it is fiercely committed to improving Israel’s future. The Blueprint Negev is the JNF’s ambitious $600 million plan that seeks to revitalize, develop, and maintain the Negev Desert which encompasses more than 45 percent of Israel’s land mass.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

aspca-logoAre you an animal lover? If so, you’re probably familiar with the foundation we’re focusing on today called the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, better known by its acronym ASPCA. This non-profit organization has dedicated itself to preventing animal cruelty for over 100 years and has remained steadfast in its mission “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States” since its formation in 1866.

The ASPCA was formed in 1824 by Henry Bergh in response to the creation of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in the United Kingdom. It remains the oldest animal welfare organization in the country and it was the first humane organization to emerge in the Western Hemisphere. Thanks to Bergh’s efforts, the first anti-cruelty law was passed on April 19, 1866.

With an initial goal of improving the welfare and health of animals, the ASPCA opened its first animal hospitals in 1912. Since then, the ASPCA has managed to spearhead breakthroughs in technology and medicine, including anesthesia for animals and open-heart surgery in 1918 and 1961, respectively. Besides its hospitals and ongoing anti-cruelty efforts, the ASPCA also provides pets and parents services and programs for at-risk animals.
