The Pulmonary Hypertension Association Brings Patients Together

phalogo

For today, we’re exploring the efforts of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, a nonprofit dedicated to helping patients dealing with the effects of pulmonary hypertension. Since 1991 the organization has connected them with others that are also fighting the illness via support groups, specialists, and centers focused on hypertension.

Founded by a group of women in the late 1980s, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association has grown by leaps and bounds from its humble beginnings into a community with a worldwide presence of over 15,000 pulmonary hypertension (PH) patients.

When the organization was founded, there were a mere fifty diagnosed cases of PH and information of how to fight it was minimal. The women responsible for its founding put their heads together and figured out that if they were able to find each other, there may be others to reach out to, giving hope to those who may have been feeling like they were fighting PH without any support. Theresa Knazik, Dorothy Olson, and Shirley Brown were eventually joined by a fourth patient named Pat Paton and decided to spearhead a new mission of reaching out to others.

A Home for Every Family Thanks to Habitat for Humanity

HfHPerhaps one of the most well-known foundations in the United States, Habitat for Humanity has worked with thousands of individuals and families in obtaining simple and affordable housing thanks to the kindness of volunteers. These people have chosen to work together to build, rehabilitate, and preserve more than 700,000 homes since the nonprofit organization’s founding in 1976.

Habitat for Humanity is the vision of its founder Millard Dean Fuller. Fuller was looking for a way to help his less fortunate neighbors, launching Koinonia Partners in 1968 which focused largely on Partnership Housing. Using a “Fund for Humanity”, donations went towards buying building materials so that a team of volunteers could build simple homes for families. These families would pay back costs of the materials with no interest involved.

Millard Fuller died in 2009 at the age of 74, receiving numerous awards and honorary degrees during his illustrious life. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor by President Bill Clinton in 1996.

Learn More About the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center

holologo

Since the 1980s, the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center (HDEC) has operated as a non-profit organization aiming to present and preserve a historically accurate record of the Holocaust. The organization has achieved this goal for over a decade thanks to eyewitness accounts from individuals who lived through the Holocaust, survived it , as well as those that took on roles of rescuers and liberators. The HDEC also focuses its efforts on teaching people from all walks of life the Holocaust’s universal lessons via programming and exhibitions, concentrating on the always important issues of prejudice, racism, stereotyping, and bullying.

One of the HDEC’s major achievements is its role in mandating that all public schools in the state of Florida implement Holocaust education after former Governor Lawton Chiles signed the Florida Statute 1003.42.

The HDEC is in the middle of opening the South Florida Holocaust Museum with plans of including the names and faces of victims in addition to a fully restored rail car and a US Army M3A4 Sherman tank. Future visitors will be able to browse photographs, documents, and other items that are Holocaust related. The HDEC’s research and reference library has more than 5,000 books, DVDs, journals, and videos dealing with the Holocaust.

The Gesù Church and its History

gesuchurchRoman Catholic Gesù Church is a historic piece of architecture located in Miami that came about as a result of the city’s rich Catholic community. Fun fact: the church is older than any other church in Miami.  When the church initially opened its doors during the late 1800s, its construction consisted of wood and the land it was built upon was a donation by American industrialist Henry Flagler, perhaps best known for being the father of Miami and Palm Beach.  It wasn’t until 1921 that The Gesù Church began to switch to a concrete and steel structure.

Throughout its several decades of existence, Gesù Church remains South Florida’s spiritual ambassador for its vibrant Catholic community.  In addition to being a church, the Sisters of St. Joseph oversaw the Gesù Church’s Gesù School which opened in 1905 and was once called The Academy of the Sisters of St. Joseph St. Catherine’s Convent. The school remained in operation for several years until it was demolished in 1984.

Today, Gesù Church is still one of the three downtown churches and ts parish has been staffed by the Jesuits of Antilles province for over ten years.  As the oldest church in South Florida, Gesù welcomes everyone to visit the landmark that has served the community for over 100 years.

The Many Goals of the Women’s International Zionist Organization

wizoToday we’re turning our attention over to the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO), a nonprofit made up of volunteers living in over fifty countries that remain focused on the social welfare of Israeli society and each and every one of its sectors. The organization also seeks to advance the status of women as well as promote Jewish education in Israel. WIZO holds the distinction of being the largest provider of social welfare services.

It was in 1920 that WIZO began in Great Britain, eventually being recognized in 1959 by the United Nations as a non-governmental organization. It became the first Zionist organization to receive consultative status at the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (better known these days simply as UNICEF) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

During the 1980s WIZO implemented its American branch with the goal of strengthening its ties and providing funding to its Israel-based projects. Today the organization is responsible for managing 750 social welfare programs that include homes for girls in distress, child care centers, battered women shelters, and elderly services. Among its many awards and accolades, WIZO was awarded the Israel Prize for its societal contributions and lifetime achievements.

Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America Declares War on Digestive Diseases

ccfacolorlogo

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) was founded by Shelby Modell and Irwin M. Rosenthal back in 1965. The nonprofit foundation is full operated by volunteers and remains steadfast in its dedication to aid the ongoing efforts to find a cure for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, as well as bettering the lives of children and adults that are combating digestive diseases. Since it was founded the CCFA is now consists of more than 45,000 members and it has over 25 chapters across the United States.

The funds earned or gathered by the CCFA go towards studies intended to determine the causes and a cure for Crohn’s disease and colitis. These funds are typically donated to medical institutions or investigators that are establishing the blueprints for their career. The CCFA also finances underdeveloped areas of research. Today, the foundation has managed to raise and provide over $150 million in important funding.

When it isn’t spearheading funding initiatives, the CCFA also aims to offer patient support services and literature in every single one of its chapters. These include informational pamphlets, books, awareness campaigns, and chapter events with the goal of providing a better understanding of what patients and their parents are going through. Advocacy is also an important component of the CCFA as some of its volunteers are patients as well as friends, family, and caregivers that want to make a difference and lay the groundwork to a future where Crohn’s and colitis are curable diseases.

Learn More About the Jewish National Fund

jnfThe Jewish National Fund (JNF) was founded back in 1901 and has operated for over 100 years. It has grown tremendously from its small beginnings into an environmental leader with a global reputation that has managed to plant more than 200 million trees. The JNF has also built over 230 dams and reservoirs, developed more than 200,000 acres of land, and it has created over 1,500 parks. Another goal of the JNF is to ensure that children and young adults of Israeli descent continue to have strong ties with Israel’s rich and extensive heritage.

The JNF was founded by one-time Viennese journalist Theodor Herzi who chose to create a national fund to purchase land for a Jewish State in Ottoman-controlled Palestine. The fund experienced exponential growth, reaching more than 10 million Jewish people across 65+ countries by the 1920s. In 2001 the JNF celebrated 100 years of operation and to this day it is fiercely committed to improving Israel’s future. The Blueprint Negev is the JNF’s ambitious $600 million plan that seeks to revitalize, develop, and maintain the Negev Desert which encompasses more than 45 percent of Israel’s land mass.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

aspca-logoAre you an animal lover? If so, you’re probably familiar with the foundation we’re focusing on today called the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, better known by its acronym ASPCA. This non-profit organization has dedicated itself to preventing animal cruelty for over 100 years and has remained steadfast in its mission “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States” since its formation in 1866.

The ASPCA was formed in 1824 by Henry Bergh in response to the creation of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in the United Kingdom. It remains the oldest animal welfare organization in the country and it was the first humane organization to emerge in the Western Hemisphere. Thanks to Bergh’s efforts, the first anti-cruelty law was passed on April 19, 1866.

With an initial goal of improving the welfare and health of animals, the ASPCA opened its first animal hospitals in 1912. Since then, the ASPCA has managed to spearhead breakthroughs in technology and medicine, including anesthesia for animals and open-heart surgery in 1918 and 1961, respectively. Besides its hospitals and ongoing anti-cruelty efforts, the ASPCA also provides pets and parents services and programs for at-risk animals.
