The Amazing Make-A-Wish Foundation

makeawish-1The Make-A-Wish Foundation is among the most well-known in the country. It is a non-profit known for granting “wishes” to children dealing with medical conditions that are terminal or life threatening. These wishes are granted to children between the ages of three and seventeen.

Make-A-Wish Foundation came about in 1980 as a result of seven-year-old Christopher James Greicius. Greicius was battling leukemia and ha aspirations of one being a police officer. Thanks to the kindness of officers at the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Greicius has the opportunity to spend a day realizing his dream of being a police officer. In fact, he became Arizona’s first honorary Public Safety patrolman. Greicius passed away shortly after having his wish fulfilled, but it served as a catalyst in the creation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Numerous celebrities have worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Professional wrestler John Cena maintains the record for granting the largest amount of wishes, having fulfilled more than 500 wishes. Following far behind with more than 250 wishes fulfilled in singer and songwriter Justin Bieber.

The Noble Efforts of the Jewish National Fund

jnfIn 1901, the Jewish National Fund (JNF) was founded and it has been going strong over 100 years later. It has seen exponential growth from its humble beginnings into an environmental leader with a reputation spanning the globe, planting over 200 million trees. The JNF is also responsible for creating over 200 dams and reservoirs, developing numerous acres of land, and it can also boast about its 1,000+ parks. When it isn’t improving the environment, the JNF also dedicates itself to making sure that children and young adults of Israeli descent maintain their ties with their Israeli heritage.

The JNF is the vision of its founder Theodor Herz, a former journalist. Herz sought to create a national fund to purchase land for a Jewish State in Ottoman-controlled Palestine. The fund quickly grew, increasing its reach to over 10 million Jewish people across 60+ countries by the 1920s. In 2001 the JNF achieved 100 years of operation and it remains steadfast in its mission to improve Israel’s future. The Blueprint Negev is the JNF’s lofty $600 million plan aiming to revitalize, develop, and maintain the Negev Desert which encompasses over forty percent of Israel’s land mass.

When it involves an injury or sickness, the miracle is all about receiving optimum care with the peace of mind that the individuals taking care of your child have the professional skills to take care of your child no matter how complex the case becomes. This is among the many reasons why countless families have chosen Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center.

Hetrick-Martin Institute: An LGBTQ Youth Ally

hetrickMartinBased in New York, the Hetrick-Martin Institute has remained steadfast in its efforts to assist LGBTQ youth. These youths have diverse backgrounds and range in age from 13 to 24.

Oliver’s Hearing Aid Bank Fights the Effects of Hearing Loss

heyOliver!

A University of Miami division, Oliver’s Hearing Aid Bank was started by and is named after twelve-year-old patient Oliver Stern. Oliver’s Hearing Bank seeks to supply hearing aids to children grappling with hearing loss that are financially qualified. Hearing aids that are no longer in use or are considered surplus are recycled. Each hearing aid is meticulously tested and then reprogrammed so it can be used by another patient.

Oliver Stern was just two years old when he became a patient at the UHealth Ear Institute’s Department of Otolaryngology and he remains one to this day. Unable to hear since birth, he wore hearing aids until he turned four years old and was given cochlear implants by the Otolaryngology Department’s Chair, Dr. Fred Telischi. Since the implants, Oliver has undergone audiology and therapy services and he remains an important Ear Institute ambassador.

Would you like to donate to Oliver’s Hearing Aid Bank? If so, you can send in your old hearing aid no matter how old it may be and allow someone the opportunity to hear again or for the very first time.
